This town, Athy Ireland in County Kildare is the kind of town that you think of in Ireland that the signs of the times are barely noticable still.
This small town of only 9000 residents give or take, has a feel of 1950’s nostalgia a time when kids rode their bikes all over town, without worry, where you leave your doors unlocked and don’t worry too much.
Athy has historical beauty throughout the town. The barrow river that runs through the town, has a 15th century castle nestled into it. White’s castle is a 14 room castle with 3 floors.
White Castle was built in 1417 by Sir John Talbot the Viceroy of Ireland to protect the newly built bridge over the River Barrow. Originally the southern half of the castle, nearest to the bridge, was a four storied rectangular urban tower house. Modern rendering obscures a lot of the original features but you can still see some of the punch-dressed stones around the windows. There is a crucifixion plaque on the left side of the original doorway bearing the date 1573 and the name Richard Coosen, Sovereign of Athy.
